Basic Course in Astronomy

Would you like to learn more about astronomy? Whether you are a beginner or not, our popular Basic Course in Astronomy will give you an overview of astronomy and what is out there in the universe.

Topics dealt will include the history of astronomy, the solar system and the planets, stars and constellations, deep-sky objects (nebulae, galaxies etc.), astronomical equipment and the basics of astro photography.

Lectures will be held every week between 18:30 and 19:45 at Stella Maris College (Gzira) with the exception of the last lecture (9:00-11:30).

Schedule of the talks:

  • Thursday, 16th October – The history of astronomy
  • Thursday, 23rd October – The Sun and our planetary system
  • Wednesday 29th October – The stars – constellations to black holes
  • Saturday, 1st November – Observing session
  • Thursday, 6th November – Beyond the solar system – into the depths of the Universe
  • Thursday, 13th November – Astronomical instruments
  • Saturday 15th November – Astrophotography

The sessions will run weekly from 16 October until 15 November. The participation fee for this course will be of €35 per person for non-members.

(For members of the Astronomical Society this Basic Course is free provided that their membership fee has been paid by end September 2014.).
