‘The tears of St. Lawrence,’ better known as the Perseid meteor shower, should put on a grand display on the night of August 11-12. Conditions this year favour this summer bonanza of ‘shooting stars’ because the Moon does not interfere. We can expect to see about 80 meteors per hour prior to dawn. The Perseids are rich in bright meteors that often show persistent trains. They can generate a few fireballs too.
