How Stars Surf the Waves

Dr Debattista will discuss how in recent years we have learned that stars are not necessarily destined to remain at the same radius from the Galactic centre as they were born in. Evidence of this ‘radial migration’ will be presented and some of the consequences from research carried out by his team will be shown. The Gaia satellite will provide us with the data to quantify radial migration in detail in the coming years.
